Biogas for Orphanage Mwatate

On Friday 12 June 2015, SOFIs WORLD donated and installed the first ‘Simgas’ biogas plant under guidance of Biogas Taita Ltd and two Simgas fundis (tradesmen) at an orphanage in Mwatate, a village between Voi and Wundanyi. The orphanage wanted a biogas digester for a long time, but because they don’t own the land, we had to wait until we found a different mobile model which can be removed from the ground and taken with them if they would have to move some time in the future. At the same time, this was a good opportunity for Biogas Taita to learn more about the installation of the digester, so it can be installed in other places as an alternative biogas solution to the fixed dome plant. Biogas Taita uses this opportunity to monitor and test the system first, before installing it in other places, as it wants to guarantee its performance to its clients.

The orphanage was very happy with the donation, which allows them to reduce costs of firewood used for cooking, while at the same time reducing deforestation and smoke-related health issues for the children and staff. We expect to save at least 7 tons of firewood and nearly 10 tons CO² each year. The biogas plant is receiving a lot of attention of the community, and will act as a showcase for other similar institutions.

The day was very fun, with many fundis, SOFIs and local volunteers involved in the installation, even the kids helped out wherever they could, though they also saw the opportunity to turn the site into a playground as much as they could! The slaughterhouse even donated one truck of cowdung to kick-start the biogasdigester. The orphanage has made a deal with the local market next door, to collect and give the organic waste to the orphanage twice a week after the big market days to be put into the bio-digester. A wonderful way of making use of the waste which would otherwise go to waste! We will keep you updated around the performance of the bio-digester.

Am Freitag, den 12. Juni 2015 schenkte und installierte SOFIs WORLD dem Waisenhaus Mwatate unter Anleitung der Biogas Taita Ltd und zweier Hersteller-Fachkräfte die erste Simgas-Biogasanlage. Das Waisenhaus wünschte sich die Biogasanlage seit langer Zeit. Da es jedoch nicht Grundstückseigentümer ist, warteten wir, bis wir eine Modellanlage aus Kunsttoffteilen fanden, die wieder abgebaut und reinstalliert werden kann, wenn die Einrichtung in Zukunft umziehen muss.

Gleichzeitig ist dies eine gute Gelegenheit Erfahrungen über diese Anlagenart zu sammeln und mit den bisher genutzten festgemauerten Kuppeldomanlagen zu vergleichen. Biogas Taita nutzt hier auch die Möglichkeit erstmals Leistungsfähigkeit und Haltbarkeit des Systems zu testen. Wir wollen seine Effektivität und Lebensdauer garantieren, bevor es anderweitig installiert wird.

Das Waisenhaus ist überglücklich, da beim Kochen nun die hohen Brennholzkosten reduziert werden. Der Raubbau der Wälder und die massive Gesundheitsbelastung durch Rauchgas für Kinder und Angestellte werden drastisch reduziert. Wir erwarten eine jährliche Einsparung von mindestens 7 t Brennholz und knapp 10 t CO². Die Biogasanlage erhält viel Aufmerksamkeit im Umkreis der Kommune und dient auch als Demonstrationsbeispiel für andere soziale Einrichtungen.

Es war ein Freudentag für alle beteiligten Handwerker, Praktikanten und Freiwilligen. Auch die Kinder hatten viel Spaß beim Helfen und nutzten die Baustelle, soweit erlaubt, auch als Spielplatz. Vom Schlachthof erhielten wir als Kickstarter sogar einen ganzen LKW mit Kuhdung geschenkt. Mit dem nahen Markt handelte das Waisenhaus aus, dass zweimal die Woche alle organischen Abfälle gesammelt wird und in die Anlage eingespeist wird. Die beste Art Abfall zu nutzen, anstatt ihn zu deponieren. Wir werden sie über die Leistungsfähigkeit dieser Anlage auf dem Laufenden halten.
